FAIRBANKS - Jaguar Kristeller, an eighth-grader at Tanana Middle School, sees a definite link between art and science.

“When I build robots I not only make it function well, I make it look good,” he said. “So building robots is sculpting art to me.”

The young artist and engineer paints, draws and sculpts.

Many of his pieces of art have a scientific flare. He submitted a sculpture to the fair of a skeleton with every bone labeled. He’s painted images of space.

“After high school I want to go to college and learn physics, math, science and many more subjects that make me able to be an astronaut,” he said.

“I wish to be the first man on Mars. I also have lots of interest in robotics and might want to be an engineer, too. I’m leaning many design and architectural features that will help me achieve my dreams.”

Linda Cozzini-McKirgan, Kristeller’s art teacher, said the young man is a positive leader in class.

“Kids group around him to see what he is doing,” she said. “He cares about his work and it shows in his careful attention to detail.”

Kristeller said he plays “tons of sports,” including soccer, tennis, skiing, running volleyball, basketball and hockey. He plays the piano and enjoys playing pinochle and going fishing.

He’s in the Johns Hopkins and National Junior Honor Society. He said he “conquers in chess.”

His favorite art is photographs taken of planets and moons and other celestial bodies.
